What is placental encapsulation?
Placenta encapsulation is the process of drying the placenta and placing it into capsules. The postpartum mother then ingests the capsules over a period of time.
I know… it sounds gross, right? But consider it. Your placenta is known to contain hormones, iron, and other nutrients. Studies have shown that women who engage in the practice of placenta ingestion have a reduced incidence of depression, more energy, less postnatal bleeding, and increased milk production. Placentas have been used medicinally for thousands of years.
Some women feel squeamish about eating their placenta raw or in a smoothie. A simple alternative to this is placenta encapsulation which entails slowly drying the placenta, grinding it, and placing it into capsules. Herbs are also incorporated in this process. Encapsulating your placenta also allows you to ingest it over a longer period of time.
If you would like to utilize this service, talk to your doctor or midwife about bringing your placenta home with you after the birth. (Alternatively, we can arrange for me to collect your placenta from the hospital. The sooner it is encapsulated, the sooner you will be able to use the capsules.) Keep your placenta refrigerated or frozen until I arrange to pick it up. It will take me approximately 24-48 hours to encapsulate your placenta for you. Please note that I offer my doula clients a discount for this service.
I can also make a print of your placenta before I dry it. I am also able to do raw placenta pills, placenta tinctures and salves (able to be used for both mother and baby), placenta bath mixtures, and beauty products made with placenta powder.
